NEW “BAD BOYS”: DANNY TIDWELL AND JAKOB KARR

So You Think You Can Dance alumni Danny Tidwell and Jakob Karr have joined Rasta Thomas’s Bad Boys of Dance and will be touring with that company this summer. I’m very glad to hear this for Bad Boys’ sake since all I could keep thinking the last time I saw them perform at the Joyce was how much better it would be if all of the dancers were at Rasta’s level. All of the dancers he had were good, but he was just … Rasta! Now he’s got more star power up there with him.

In other SYTYCD news, Alex Wong will be competing in the next season, along with Billy Bell (which we already knew). I mean, for now they made it to Vegas, but, you know, if they don’t make the top 20 I think SYTYCD may have some problems!

PATTI LUPONE WILL MAKE NEW YORK CITY BALLET DEBUT NEXT YEAR

According to Playbill, Broadway legend Patti LuPone will make her NYCB debut next year, in the company’s Spring 2011 season. She’ll act in a new production, by Lynne Taylor-Corbett, of The Seven Deadly Sins, a Kurt Weill ballet with libretto by Bertolt Brecht. Balanchine choreographed the original version of that ballet, which is about a character depicted both by an actress and a dancer.

I’ve never seen the ballet but I love LuPone. Something definitely to look forward to. For a little more about the history of that ballet, see the NYTimes ArtsBeat blog’s post.

BARYSHNIMOSS

So now Baryshnikov and supermodel Kate Moss are making a ballet movie together. I know — all of these ballet movies! Moss is reportedly taking ballet lessons in preparation. The film is by Michael Clarke and shooting will begin in July in Marseilles. It’s not clear how widely the film is to be distributed but it’s to premiere at a fundraiser in England and later will be shown in galleries as a work of art.

Interesting: according to New York Magazine via British Vogue, Moss shouldn’t have too hard a time learning to dance on pointe since toe shoes aren’t that different from 6-inch heels. Toe shoes even include padding. What do we think about that one?

NEW PLANS FOR MORPHOSES

Most of us have already heard (and were somewhat shocked by) the news that Christopher Wheeldon has decided to leave Morphoses, the company he founded three years ago. And most of us were wondering how or if the company was going to go on without his name attached. Today, Lourdes Lopez, Morphoses’ co-founder and executive director, announced a new plan for the company: to have resident artists curate programming on a seasonal basis.

Here is more from the press release:

“Morphoses will adopt a curatorial model in which the company will invite artists from various disciplines to take on the role of resident artist for one season, leading the company’s artistic vision for that year,” said Ms. Lopez.

The embrace of a curatorial model is a natural evolution and expansion of the company’s mission and vision.  To date, more than half of the company’s repertory is comprised of works by a diverse group of emerging and well-known choreographers that include Michael Clark, William Forsythe, Tim Harbour, Adam Hougland, Lightfoot León, Edwaard Liang, Pontus Lidberg, Annabelle Lopez Ochoa, Liv Lorent, Emily Molnar, Alexei Ratmansky, as well as Frederick Ashton, George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins; the balance of the works were created by Christopher Wheeldon.

Morphoses has become a robust platform for some of the most talented choreographers in contemporary ballet, enabling them to create work with a versatile company of dancers.  Collaborators have included such artists as Los Carpinteros, Francisco Costa, Hugo Dalton, Narciso Rodriguez, Joby Talbot, Isabel and Ruben Toledo, and Martha Wainwright.

“Christopher’s artistic vision and talent has helped make Morphoses one of today’s most important dance companies,” said Ms. Lopez.

By adopting this curatorial model, the company will afford artists the opportunity to use Morphoses as a stage to forge dynamic creative partnerships that will produce innovative works for the dance world. This model will enhance the company’s capacity to reach out to a larger, broader audience and engage a younger generation.  The company has begun the process of identifying the roster of resident artists for the upcoming seasons and will be announcing plans in the near future.

“In addition to its artistic achievements, Morphoses has established a successful business model and self-sustaining administrative structure that allows the company’s resources to be focused on its artistic goals, bringing forward a new generation of talent to younger audiences,” added Ms. Lopez.  Since its founding, Morphoses has achieved artistic and financial success through annual seasons in New York and London, domestic and international touring, and private and institutional support.

“The company has built up a reserve of funds to support the curatorial model,” stated Catherine Gildor, a member of the board of Morphoses. “We see this as validation of the crucial role that Morphoses has taken on in the world of contemporary ballet and are therefore committed to building upon our success.”

Morphoses’ mission is to broaden the scope of classical ballet by emphasizing innovation and fostering creativity through collaboration.

BURN THE FLOOR GOES TO TORONTO

Where it will star Pasha and Anya! Photo (and story) taken from here.  Dancers will also include SYTYCD alum Karen Hauer and Artem Chigvintsev. The show will stop briefly in Vancouver, from April 13-18, then head to Toronto from April 22-May 1, before traveling on to Europe.

ALVIN AILEY BEGINS THEIR 20 CITY TOUR IN DC AND VP HOSTS A CELEBRATION IN THEIR HONOR

The luckiest dancers in the world, I swear, are those in Alvin Ailey. That company seems to tour more cities in more countries every year than any other performing arts troupe. It’s like, become a dancer and see the world! Anyway, they began their current U.S.-wide tour last night in Washington DC, where the Vice President and Dr. Biden hosted a celebration in their honor. Vice Pres Biden apparently admitted he was never a fan of ballet until he and his wife witnessed Mikhail Baryshnikov years ago. SAMANTHA HARRIS IS LEAVING DANCING WITH THE STARS

MSNBC (via People.com) reports that Samantha Harris is leaving her position as Dancing With the Stars co-host in order to focus on her work on The Insider and Entertainment Tonight. She calls DWTS a “dream job” and says she’s sad to leave. Host Tom Bergeron is reportedly hoping to have her on sometime as a contestant (which could be fun). Season 10 begins March 22nd.

ADAM SHANKMAN ON CHOREOGRAPHING FOR THE ACADEMY AWARDS

Here’s a video of Adam Shankman talking about the upcoming number he’s choreographing for the Academy Awards. According to SYTYCism, Jakob Karr will be performing in that number, and those auditioning included SYTYCD alums Billy Bell, Travis Wall, Katee Shean, Russell Ferguson, Jaimie Goodwin, Legacy Perez, Ellenore Scott, and Kathryn McCormick.

TIX TO THARP’S COME FLY WITH ME NOW ON SALE

Tickets to the New York production of Twyla Tharp’s new dance musical, Come Fly With Me, are now on sale. The story follows four couples as they fall in and out of love. It’s set to Sinatra (music will have recordings of his original voice backed by live accompaniment), so I have high hopes. Here’s a Times review from the show’s Atlanta opening in September. NY previews begin March 1.

SIMONE MESSMER PROMOTED TO SOLOIST AT ABT

With all of my book hysteria, I’d missed this news (which was released the same day as the novel): a favorite dancer of mine was finally promoted to soloist.

ERICA PEREIRA PROMOTED TO SOLOIST AT NYCB

I’m a little late on this news, but for NYers who haven’t heard, Erica Pereira was recently promoted from corps member to soloist at New York City Ballet. I first noticed her in 2006 when she was the youngest Juliet cast in Peter Martins’ Romeo + Juliet (she was still then only an apprentice with the company). I knew how special she was then, and so I think this promotion is very well deserved.

Getting so excited for NYCB’s Winter season to begin! Nutcracker shows through Sunday, January 3rd, then the regular season begins the following Tuesday, January 5th, when the new Peter Martins will show, along with Balanchine’s Who Cares?

Ballet preceded by cadillac margaritas and duck tortilla pie at Rosa Mexicano, then followed with Ed’s Chowder House martinis and scallop ravioli:) Or maybe Honoo & green tea martinis at the A-Rod / Wallace Shawn bar… Ballet season: yum!

GEORGINA PARKINSON HAS DIED

Former Royal Ballet ballerina and current American Ballet Theater mistress Georgina Parkinson has died of cancer. She was 71. In addition to her work with ABT, she was apparently coaching Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis for their dance roles in the upcoming film, Black Swan.

DANNY TIDWELL ET AL IN DRA’S DANCE FROM THE HEART MEN

Danny Tidwell and some other SLSG male faves — like Marcelo Gomes, and Jamar Roberts of Alvin Ailey — are going  to be performing in Dancers Responding to AIDS’ winter 2010 benefit, “Dance From the Heart / Men,” on January 11th at Cedar Lake’s performance space.

COMPLEXIONS RETURNS TO SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE FOR SEASON SIX FINALE

Oh cool — Dwight Rhoden and Desmond Richardson, founders of Complexions Contemporary Ballet, are returning to  So You Think You Can Dance for this Tuesday’s finale. They’re to choreograph a piece for one set of finalists (press release doesn’t say who). Exciting! Press release doesn’t say Desmond will dance, like last time, but who knows!?

Well, if not, here’s a vid of him in Episodes (which, coincidentally, Alvin Ailey is also performing this season at City Center, and which members of that company performed earlier this season on this show).

AMERICAN BALLET THEATER’S NEW NUTCRACKER SEASON AT BAM

Yesterday morning at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, ABT announced their plan to hold an annual Nutcracker season at BAM. Above is SLSG favorite, soloist Craig Salstein, enthusiastically speaking to the crowd. He was the only dancer to address the crowd; David Hallberg was there too but stood in the back the whole time. A group of young dancers from the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School of Ballet (associated with ABT) was there as well — they’ll be dancing in the party scenes when the production opens next year, on December 23, 2010. For the first year, the season will be two weeks, but after that the company hopes to have a longer run.

Here’s a slightly better picture of him, by Fabrizio Ferri. Someday I will get a pro camera, I swear!

This was the first time I’d heard Ratmansky speak. He is very soft-spoken and has a heavy Russian accent and seemed to know what he wanted to say but struggled a bit to get the words out in English. And he makes the same grammatical mistakes as Pasha and Baryshnikov (mainly leaving out articles — there are no definite or indefinite articles in Russian — a, an, the — so they tend to leave those out: “…is great score,” etc.) I think English must be the hardest language to learn, especially for Russians. I know Russian is the hardest language I ever tried to learn…

Anyway, Ratmansky seemed shy and soft-spoken but genuinely excited, especially when talking about Tchaikovsky’s score, which he called the greatest ballet music ever written. I felt vindicated :)

But Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz really kind of stole the show with his little speech. He was so out of place in this crowd of rather gentle artists with that booming Brooklyn-accented voice! He of course praised ABT’s decision to hold the season in Brooklyn, then told Ratmansky he should move to the borough since it boasts the greatest Russian population in the U.S. He also called Brooklyn the dance capital of New York (in terms of studio space — which leads to the great number of companies rehearsing there), which is in turn the creative capital of the U.S. These politicians do kind of know how to make their constituencies proud. After bemoaning the fact that the last time ABT was in Brooklyn was before Baryshnikov defected, he called the ABT / BAM plan “a grand jete into the future for Brooklyn.”

The project is expected to cost $5 million and is being partly funded by David A. Koch (yes, of the Koch Theater — he’s matching dollar for dollar donations up to $2.5). ABT also plans to perform community outreach, particularly in Brooklyn schools, including pre-performance workshops for the children, attendance at dress rehearsals, and dance classes.

The rest of the production team includes Jennifer Tipton, lighting designer extraordinaire, and Richard Hudson, an award-winning theater designer, who will design costumes and scenes. Below are some of his sketches:

ROBERTO BOLLE OUT WITH MINOR INJURY

Oh no. Roberto Bolle has had to cancel a couple performances in Europe, including a “naked debut” in the esteemed Opera Chic’s words, due to a slight injury that required minor surgery. Speedy recovery, Mr. Bolle.

Speaking of said naked debut, how in the world did I miss this post of hers?

BENJAMIN MILLEPIED CHOREOGRAPHING FOR “BLACK SWAN” MOVIE

There were rumors swarming around that NYCB’s Ben Millepied would be choreographing for the upcoming film starring Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis, and they appear to be true.

Says Director Darren Aronofsky:

“My sister was a dancer growing up and I was always in the background, so I always thought it would be a really interesting world to film in. And after wrestling and working with maybe the lowest form of art [in 'The Wrestler'], it was kind of interesting to move to the highest form of art,” he said, adding that dance appreciation can be an acquired taste: “It’s taken a long time to develop an understanding of the details, and the more you get exposed to it, the more complexity you see.”

MIA MICHAELS’ NEW SHOW(S)!

There’s an interview with Mia Michaels in the Wall Street Journal about why she left SYTYCD. In it she reveals that she has not one but potentially three new shows in the works:

Are the rumors that you might get your own show true?

These rumors are very true. I can’t go into details about it, but there are three separate shows we’re working on, and all three of them are very different. One is a choreography show, one is a doc-reality show of a stage show that will be touring the states and the third one was inspired by a Web site called ‘Mia Michaels, Please Choreograph My Life.’”

ABT IN BEIJING

I’m surprised there’s been so little written about American Ballet Theater’s recent, historic trip to Beijing. It seems that newspaper art reviews are declining everywhere, not just in the U.S. Anyway, the company was recently in China to participate in the Beijing International Drama and Dance Festival. They presented the same three new works they performed at Avery Fisher here in October: Ratmansky’s Seven Sonatas, Barton’s One of Three, and Millepied’s Everything Doesn’t Happen at Once. You can see part of the Ratmansky in the video posted here, on CCTV.com, an English language website.

LADY GAGA: “ONE OF THE NIJINSKYS OF OUR EPOCH”

Over the weekend, the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art celebrated its 30th anniversary with an evening of performances, including one by pop star Lady Gaga, who debuted her new Speechless while members of the Bolshoi danced along. Milan-based artist Francesco Vezzoli orchestrated the pairing, telling the Daily Beast, “Gaga is one of the Nijinskys of our epoch. So I don’t know if it’s going to be great artwork. But so far I think I made a good choice.”

Hmmm, not completely sure what he means by the Nijinsky ref (unless he means she has scattered moments of genius mixed with a bit of insanity, or that she’s iconoclastic…), but anyway, here’s a sampling of what happened:

ANNA MIKHED AND VICTOR FUNG HAVE SPLIT

According to Dance Beat magazine, US and World Standard finalists Anna Mikhed and Victor Fung have broken up. Though not technically the best in the world, I’ve often found this couple just oozing with charm and charisma, as have others — they’re kind of America’s Sweethearts. They placed third in the world this year and they’ve long been second in the US Nationals. I don’t get it — first Mirko Gozzoli and Alessia Betti — well, and before them, Karina Smirnoff and Slavik Kryklyvyy– these couples break up when they’re on top.

Anna tells DB she’s “thoroughly enjoyed these last 6 years of dancing with Victor,” saying they’ve grown individually and as a partnership. “There was no incident that took place, just a recognition, perhaps mostly by myself, that our paths in partnership and in dancing were going in different directions.”

She tells fans to watch for each individually, and DB says Victor has begun looking for a new partner. Still, I’ll miss seeing them together.

PARIS OPERA BALLET STARS TO DANCE IN NYCBALLET OPENING NIGHT

How funny — I was just going on in my last post about how I fell in love with the Paris Opera Ballet through Frederick Wiseman’s currently-showing film La Danse, and now I receive news that two etoiles with that company — Aurelie Dupont (in photo above, taken from Bailarinas) and Mathias Heymann — will be performing with New York City Ballet in their opening night gala, on November 24th. In exchange, NYCB’s Ashley Bouder and Gonzalo Garcia (both SLSG faves) will perform with Paris Opera Ballet, on November 12th. Both couples will dance the “Rubies” section of Balanchine’s Jewels.

Additionally, NYCB’s opening night performance will include Alexei Ratmansky’s Concerto DSCH (my personal favorite of his) and a premiere by Peter Martins set to John Adams music and starring all of the company’s principal dancers.

Most exciting though about the dancer exchange. I’ve never seen Heymann perform live and I’ve only seen Dupont dance Trisha Brown, not full-out ballet.

WINONA RYDER & NATALIE PORTMAN IN MOVIE BASED ON NYCB DANCER

Oh cool — apparently, Winona Ryder, Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis are to star in a film called Black Swan, a thriller that follows the story of a fictitious NYCBallet dancer who may or may not be having delusions about a rival. All actresses play dancers with the company, and supposedly, there is some kind of “extreme” sex scene between Portman and Kunis. Hmmm… Can any of them dance, or will they have doubles to do the dancing, I wonder. Or will there actually be much dancing?

Directing is Darren Aronofsky, who last directed The Wrestler, and filming is expected to begin in New York next month, with a release date sometime in 2010.

AMERICA DANCES HONORING PATRICK SWAYZE MONDAY NIGHT

Just a reminder that this Monday night, November 2, is the America Dances! gala fundraiser for Career Transitions for Dancers at City Center. This year’s gala performance will honor Patrick Swayze (who will be given a posthumous Rolex Dance award), and include performances by Desmond Richardson, Ashley Bouder and Andrew Veyette of NYCB, Stephen Hanna and Tony winner Kiril Kulish of Billy Elliot the Musical, Dancing With the Stars dancers (who are as of yet unspecified), and Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet, amongst others.

Career Transitions for Dancers is a very important organization that helps dancers (who retire young and often without much education outside of dance) to transition into other careers. Swayze strongly supported the organization and was planning to attend the event and receive his award before he passed away.

NEW YORK CITY BALLET PROMOTIONS

Practically all of SLSG’s NYCB favorites who were not already principal dancers in the company have just been promoted: the always magical Kathryn Morgan (above, with Seth Orza in Martins’ Romeo + Juliet), heartthrobs Robert Fairchild and Amar Ramasar, the always dramatically compelling Tiler Peck and Tyler Angle, and the statuesque Teresa Reichlen.

All of the new principals will make their debut as such at NYCB’s winter season opening night gala, on November 24th, in Peter Martins’s new ballet set to John Adams’s Naive and Sentimental Music, which will make its world premier that night.

WOO HOO — MARY MURPHY AND VAIDOTAS SKIMELIS IN BURN THE FLOOR!

Thank you to reader Jonathan for sending me this. On December 22nd, for one night only, Mary Murphy (of So You Think You Can Dance of course) will dance with the Broadway cast of Jason Gilkison’s Burn the Floor. Very very significantly, she will be partnered by SLSG longtime favorite Vaidotas Skimelis (nicknamed Vaidas), a U.S. National Latin finalist whom I’ve long thought of as the Marcelo of ballroom.

How excellent!

TWYLA THARP NAMED ONE OF AMERICA’S BEST LEADERS 2009 BY US NEWS & WORLD REPORT

Tharp on the issue of “genius”: “Everyone has a talent. It’s simply a question of good discipline, of the good fortune to have an education that meshes with that talent, and a lot of luck.”

CAROLINA BALLET PAYS HOMAGE TO PICASSO

From now through Nov. 1, Carolina Ballet is putting on an evening-length set of dances in homage to Picasso, who designed sets for the legendary Ballets Russes. Sounds v cool.

“Picasso’s influence on 20th- and 21st-century dance was profound. His various strategies to evoke multiple perspectives simultaneously on the same body invoke the possibility of radical movement, potentially on the part of both the subject and the viewer. One can hardly call the subjects in earlier works like “Woman Playing the Mandolin” still: In shattering the human form into a complex aggregate of shifting planes, Picasso seems to be trying to capture a range of motion and a span of time in the single image.”

LET’S HAVE AN “ELOQUENTLY VIOLENT” MAYERLING FOR ABT, MR. MCKENZIE

The Royal Ballet in London recently opened their fall season with a revival of Kenneth MacMillan’s Mayerling (MacMillan of course is a SLSG favorite choreographer). It’s based on the true story of the apparent suicide / murder in 1889 of Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria and his lover Baronness Mary Vetsera whose bodies were found in Mayerling, Rudolf’s hunting lodge. Prince Rudolf, sole son of Emperor Franz Josef of Austria, was heir to the thrones of Austria, Hungary and Bohemia.

Londoners seem to be loving the ballet. From Neil Norman’s Daily Express review:

“Like John Cranko and Michael Corder, MacMillan choreographs for full-blooded men. There is never any doubt about the masculinity and virility of his creatures. The brothel scene that opens Act II reeks of cigar smoke and a sense of political unease is brilliantly conveyed by the huddled quartet of officers who periodically grab Rudolf to whisper into his ear.

“As the tragedy slides inexorably towards its conclusion, Rudolf’s entanglement with his young mistress, Mary Vetsera (Maria Galeazzi) drives him into a paroxysm of violent frustration. Watson’s tortured solo as he clutches his head and writhes in a kaleidoscope of movement had me clutching my kneecaps until my knuckles were white.

“The denouement is terrifying. As Watson duets with Galeazzi in unhinged passion, the stage seems to smoke with some of the most eloquently violent moves in classical ballet. It really doesn’t get much better than this. If you don’t have a ticket, do something dangerous to get one.”
