Dance Times Square Showcase to Star SYTYCD’s Sabra and Neil and Honor Breast Cancer Survivors

Dance Times Square (my former studio) is having their biannual professional / student showcase on October 25 at the Danny Kaye Playhouse at Hunter College. This one will feature and honor a group of breast cancer survivors from the Helen Sawaya Compassionate Care Fund. The show begins at 7:30, and from 6-7 in the Kaye theater lobby there will be a reception and pre-show silent auction to raise money for the Fund. Part of the ticket proceeds will also be donated to it.

Pro dancers this year will include Sabra Johnson and Neil Haskell, former SYTYCD winner and finalist respectively, along with Eugene Katsevman and Maria Manusova, a pair of excellent Latin dancers who usually place in the finals in the national competitions. Additionally, Aprile Millo, a star with the Met Opera, will perform (singing I suppose!). Hmmm, it’s usually only Latin / Ballroom dancers who’ve performed in the professional portion of the show, so this should be very exciting. As usual, there’s an after-party as well at the studio.
Tickets range from $25 to $75 and can be purchased here.

  1. I hope that the fundraiser goes well. It certainly sounds like a wonderful show. Is Dancing Times Square a good studio for International Latin?

This is not really related, but Slavik and Hanna along with Arunas and Katusha are supposed to be performing at The Big Apple Dancesport Challenge hosted by Columbia University! Thought you would like to know 🙂

  2. Oh wow, thanks so much for the info, Shim! I think DTS is good for Int. Latin because Melanie and Tony run it and give private coachings and they are prior national champions. Pasha and Anya used to be there, and Andrei Gavriline used to give coachings, but I think they are all gone now (including Andrei). Vibeke Toft also gives coachings and she is a former champ. So, basically, they have a lot of people giving coachings to competing couples. They don’t have a lot of group classes though for that, and I don’t know who they have these days for pro / am, if you’re looking for that. I know they have a new person named Manuel but I don’t know much about him. If you have a partner already, I know they have great coaches.

  3. Hey Tonya! I’m visiting NYC this weekend and I’ll get to see the Dance Times Square showcase! I’m also going to check out the DTS studio, it sounds like it would be a good place to take lessons 🙂

Thank you so much for your advice!

  4. By “this weekend” I meant the weekend of Oct 25th 😛

  5. That’s great, Shim! I’m so excited about the showcase — I can’t wait! I’ll be very interested to know how you like the studio, and who you take a lesson with and all — please let me know!

  6. Hi Tonya! I’m scheduled with Carolina (Carolena?) on Sunday. I hope she’s a good teacher. Let me know if you’ve had lessons with her!

  7. I don’t know Carolina; she must be new. Unless it’s Carolina Telona (who didn’t used to teach there when I was there but may now). If it’s Carolina Telona, she’s an excellent dancer. Definitely let me know how it goes!
