My new balletomane friend (who I met this past ABT season), Marie Mutsuki Mockett, has a book due out at the end of September. It’s her debut novel, Picking Bones From Ash (published by prestigious indie house Graywolf), and so far it’s received a couple of great reviews. Go Marie!

It’s the story of two women, a mother and daughter, one Japanese, the other Japanese-American, and it takes place between Japan (past and present) and San Francisco. I haven’t read it yet but can’t wait! I love novels that examine gender across cultures and generations, and it looks like it has a fair amount of suspense to boot.

  1. Tonya! This is so sweet of you. And meanwhile–since you might be the only person I know who cares–I'm so confused about Sascha Radetsky coming back to the US with no apparent contract. And why oh why has Hee Seo not been promoted yet???

  2. SwanLakeSambaGirl

I can't wait to read your novel, Marie! I don't know what's going on with Sascha — I read on Haglund's blog that he was no longer on the Dutch National Ballet roster and then I saw all the surmising on Ballet Talk about him returning to ABT, but it hasn't been announced yet so I'm not sure. I think it would be smart of them to re-hire him since they need more male dancers (there are only three male principals dancing in their upcoming contemporary season!), plus with his celebrity from Center Stage, etc. So, I hope he returns to ABT. I hope Hee gets promoted soon too! They don't seem to promote with any regularity so I guess it's whenever Kevin McKenzie decides. I'm definitely on the lookout for that news though.

    Congrats again on your book!

  3. Oh Marie, you don't know me, but I care, too! Sascha HAS to come back here and dance – and dance with Hee Seo! 😉 (in principal roles!)
And … I can't wait to read your book!! 🙂 Congratulations!

[oooh, wow – and yours, too, Tonya! 😉 …it will be out soon, this fall, yes?! :)]

    Anne W.

  4. Very interesting book. I will have to pick up a copy.

  5. SwanLakeSambaGirl

Yes, Anne, probably in early October. Thank you for remembering! I'm getting ready to do a post about the cover craziness I've been through…

  6. Sascha's BACK!!!!!! *Yay*!! :

I am SO happy about this! :))))))
